Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society Draws Attention to Prison Hunger Strike

Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society of Bahrain has called on the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Human Rights to intervene on behalf of the prisoners of Bahrain’s Dry Dock prison, who are currently engaged in a brutal hunger strike.

According to the FARS News Agency, the prisoners at Dry Dock prison, all of whom are pre-trial, are “protesting mistreatment, torture during interrogations and unfair trials[.]”  The prisoners further allege assaults, denial of human rights, and humiliation tactics used against them by the Dry Dock prison guards.  Many guard-on-prisoner and police-on-prisoner assaults have been reported in regional media.

Since March 2010 — when military forces from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates were called to Manama to put down protests and dissidents — thousands have been injured, hundreds have gone missing, and tens have been killed, according to FARS.

The situation is particularly troublesome considering that the Dry Dock prison is dangerously overcrowded, housing hundreds of detainees — both men and children — who are being detained for mostly political reasons.
