Florence ADX

Administrative Detention Maximum Florence is part of the Florence Federal Correctional Complex. The prison is also known as ADX Florence and Admax Florence. It is located in Fremont County near Florence, Colorado.

ADX Florence is the highest-security federal prison in Colorado. Additionally, it is the highest-security prison in the country. Its 37 acres house the most violent and dangerous male inmates in federal custody. According to prison officials, these inmates are so volatile they cannot be housed in a conventional facility.

ADX Florence confines prisoners 23 hours per day in solitary confinement in a single-person cell. The remaining hour is used for recreation. This is fulfilled through placement in a one-person enclosure with only a small window.

Prisoners do not have contact with other inmates for at least three years following their admission. They must earn privileges such as television through good behavior. Meals are spent alone, with food delivered to each cell by guards.

Numerous security precautions, including dogs, fences, and remote-controlled doors, prevent escape. Inmate movement and activities are tightly controlled by prison staff. The facility has housed multiple high profile inmates serving life sentences, including:

  • Unabomber Ted Kaczynski
  • Shoe Bomber Richard Reed
  • Boston Marathon Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

News reports indicate that at least eight notable inmates have died by suicide while at ADX Florence:

  • Jamie Jarold McMahan
  • Robert Gerald Knott
