United States Penitentiary Terre Haute is a high-security level federal prison located in Terre Haute, Indiana. It is overseen by the North Central Regional Office. USP Terre Haute is a Medical Care Level 2/3 prison. It houses 1,298 male inmates.

Terre Haute USP

United States Penitentiary Terre Haute is a high-security federal prison for male inmates in Vigo County in Terre Haute, Indiana 70 miles west of Indianapolis. It originally opened in 1940, with its current iteration beginning operations in 2005. Besides its standard housing units, this facility has a special confinement unit designated for offenders sentenced to death and an execution chamber. One of the highest-profile prisoners to be put to death was Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. USP Terre Haute was one of the first federal prisons to institute educational and life skills classes. As a Medical Care Level 3 facility, it serves offenders with serious physical conditions that require ongoing treatment but do not merit hospitalization. The facility is also a Mental Health Care Level 3 prison.

Terre Haute FCI

Federal Correctional Institution Terre Haute is a medium-security prison for male offenders in Vigo County in Terre Haute, Indiana. This prison facility is 70 miles west of Indianapolis. It occupies the buildings once used for USP Terre Haute’s high-security men’s prison before its new accommodations were completed in 2005. FCI Terre Haute contains a Communications Management Unit (CMU), in which inmates are assigned if their communications with each other and with outside parties are deemed potentially dangerous or terrorist-related. It is the only federal prison to feature this type of unit. All inmates are expected to perform prison work and must participate in educational and can participate in vocational, life skills, and enrichment courses. The prison is both a Mental Health Level 3 and Medical Care Level 3 facility.

Terre Haute Prison Camp

Federal Correctional Institution Terre Haute camp is a minimum-security satellite prison camp on the campus of the Terre Haute Federal Correctional Complex. It is located in Vigo County in Terre Haute, Indiana 70 miles west of Indianapolis. Designed for male offenders considered to be nonviolent with less than 10 years remaining to serve on their sentences, this Indiana federal prisons camp houses inmates in two-, eight-, and 12-person dormitory-style rooms. Inmates must take part in classes in ESL, GED, drug education, and other life skills classes. In addition, inmates can participate in recreational activities such as playing cards, arts and crafts, and other outdoor activities. Some inmates also join the Choices Program geared toward substance abuse addiction.
