Education Services
FCI Three Rivers offers literacy, GED, and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs.
Graduation ceremonies are conducted once a year for students completing GED, ESL, and vocational training classes. A $25.00 bonus is awarded for completion of GED, ESL, or VT programs. Certificates from the institution are also issued for completing ACE, Parenting, GED, and ESL classes.
Additionally, a Student of the Month is chosen from classes in the Literacy program for significant progress, dedication, and hard work. The Student of the Month is rewarded with a day off from school and work cleared through the Supervisor of Education and Unit Manager. Students are awarded a day off from school after completing every 240 hours of satisfactory progress.
Other incentives are awarded based on progress through the Three Rivers, Texas, prison Literacy Program. A parenting program and Adult Continuing Education (ACE) courses are also offered. An employment resource center is also available to assist inmates within 24 months of release in preparing for release. High school diplomas and post-secondary degrees are available through paid correspondence programs.

Federal Correctional Institution Three Rivers and the camp offer advanced occupational education in Building Trades, HVAC, Microsoft Applications, and Welding. The camp provides General Automotive, HVAC, Microsoft Applications, and Wastewater Instruction.

Apprenticeship

In May 2017, David Cavazos, a Federal Correctional Institution Three Rivers guard, was federally indicted for receiving a bribe to smuggle K2 into the prison.
In March 2017, FCI Three Rivers guard Justin Coates was arrested after he was seen pulling over another vehicle while he was armed and in uniform. He was charged with impersonating a police officer.
In November 2016, journalist Barrett Brown, who was prosecuted over stolen credit cards and fraudulent charges that he alleged he had nothing to do with, was released from Three Rivers prison, owing nearly $900,000 in restitution.
In March 2008, a gang war erupted between the Mexican Mafia and the Paisas at FCI Three Rivers resulting in one prisoner, Servando Rodriguez, dead and 22 others injured.
