On Wednesday, February 19, 2014, federal prisoner James Booker, 37, escaped from Satellite Prison Camp Lompoc in Lompoc, California.*1 SPC Lompoc is a minimum-security federal prison that, as of February 27, 2014, housed 466 male federal prisoners.
Booker, sentenced to 104 months in federal prison for possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, “walked off.” Since federal satellite prison camps rarely have fences surrounding them, this is accomplished by merely walking away from the prison when the guards aren’t looking. He was discovered missing during the next inmate count, which occurs in every Federal Bureau of Prisons’ facility at 4:00 PM, 9:30 PM, and several additional times throughout the night on weekdays. Walk-offs from satellite prison camps are not uncommon, and most such instances are discovered during inmate counts, not while the escape is in progress.
The United States Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigations are leading the effort to recapture escaped federal prisoner James Booker.
