Alderson Prison Camp

Federal Prison Camp Alderson is a minimum-security work camp for female inmates, near the town of Alderson in both Monroe and Summers Counties. First opened in 1927 as the Federal Industrial Institute for Women, it was the first federal women’s prison in the United States. The camp has no barbed wire on its perimeter fences, and inmates are nonviolent offenders. All must have jobs, and the facility emphasizes personal growth and gaining knowledge in shop crafts. Those incarcerated here live in dorms with bunk beds. Notable inmates include jazz singer Billie Holliday and business magnate and television host Martha Stewart.

Beckley FCI

Federal Correctional Institution Beckley, located in Raleigh County near Beaver, West Virginia, is a medium-security facility for male inmates with an adjacent minimum-security camp that also houses male offenders. The facility is about 50 miles southeast of Charleston, West Virginia, and 130 miles west of Roanoke. The offenders incarcerated here must obtain their GED if they do not already have a high school diploma, and English as a Second Language and many vocational courses are available. All inmates incarcerated in West Virginia federal prisons are also required to hold a prison job and participate in programs that will enhance their chances of success upon their release.

Beckley Prison Camp

Federal Correctional Institution Beckley Camp, located in Raleigh County near Beaver, West Virginia, is a minimum-security satellite camp for male inmates with an adjacent medium-security correctional institution that also houses male offenders. The camp is about 50 miles southeast of Charleston, West Virginia, and 130 miles west of Roanoke. The nonviolent offenders at this camp usually have only a short time remaining to serve but still must hold a job and take part in vocational and educational programs, in addition to self-improvement courses to smooth their transition into civilian society.

Gilmer FCI

Federal Correctional Institution Gilmer, located in Gilmer County near Glendale, West Virginia, is a medium-security facility housing male inmates. There is a minimum-security satellite camp adjoining it that also houses male offenders. It is 85 miles northeast of Charleston and 150 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. All men incarcerated here must participate in educational, vocational, and self-improvement programs in preparation for their eventual release.

Gilmer Prison Camp

Federal Correctional Institution Gilmer Camp, located in Gilmer County near Glendale, West Virginia, is a minimum-security satellite camp housing male inmates. There is a MEDIUM-security correctional institution adjoining it that also serves male offenders. It is 85 miles northeast of Charleston, West Virginia, and 150 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While inmates at the camp have fewer restrictions and security precautions than those incarcerated in other West Virginia federal prisons, everyone must pursue educational, vocational, and life skills training to prepare for their impending release.

Hazelton USP

United States Penitentiary Hazelton, located in Bruceton Mills in Preston County, West Virginia, less than two miles from the Maryland border, is a maximum-security penitentiary housing male offenders. Called “Misery Mountain” by many of its inmates, the institution opened in 2004. It is part of the Federal Correctional Complex Hazelton, along with a minimum-security satellite camp and a separate prison built in 2015, known as FCI Hazelton Medium. Inmates live in cells, and the prison is secured with guard towers, fencing, and other safety mechanisms. As is the case with other West Virginia federal prisons, offenders incarcerated here are expected to attain literacy, educational, vocational, and life skills goals and maintain a prison job.

Hazelton FCI

Federal Correctional Institution Hazelton, located in Bruceton Mills in Preston County, West Virginia, less than two miles from the Maryland border, is a medium-security facility housing male offenders. It is part of the Federal Correctional Complex Hazelton, along with a minimum-security satellite camp and a separate penitentiary. In addition to the standard housing found in other federal prisons in West Virginia, FCI Hazelton contains a Specialized Housing Unit (SHU) where inmates are assigned as punishment or other administrative reasons. While there, they can only leave their cell for an hour a day for recreation. Prisoners must hold down a prison job, with opportunities for work existing in fields such as the building trades, Microsoft Office, graphic arts, and culinary arts.

Hazelton Secure Female Facility

Federal Correctional Institution Hazelton Secure Female Facility is a high-security women’s prison located in Bruceton Mills in Preston County, West Virginia, less than two miles from the Maryland border. It is part of the Federal Correctional Complex Hazelton. Offenders live in dormitory-style housing in cell blocks with two-person bunk beds. Prison jobs are compulsory and are available in heating, ventilation, carpentry, food services, landscaping, plumbing, and more. Offenders who do not have a high school diploma must obtain their GED, and participation in more advanced academic and life skills courses is also encouraged. 

Hazelton Prison Camp

Federal Correctional Institution Hazelton Camp, located in Bruceton Mills in Preston County, West Virginia, less than two miles from the Maryland border, is a minimum-security satellite camp serving male offenders. It is part of the Federal Correctional Complex Hazelton, along with a medium-security facility for men, a secure facility for women, and a separate penitentiary. Internal controls and security measures are more relaxed at the camp than in other parts of the facility. Still, inmates must hold jobs, pursue their educations and take self-improvement classes.

McDowell FCI

Federal Correctional Institution McDowell, located in McDowell County in Welch, West Virginia, is a medium-security institution. The facility opened in 2010and also contains a minimum-security camp. Both institutions serve male inmates. All inmates must pursue educational, vocational and life skills goals, while holding down prison employment.

McDowell Prison Camp

Federal Correctional Institution McDowell Camp, located in McDowell County in Welch, West Virginia, is a minimum-security satellite camp. The facility opened in 2010and also contains a medium-security institution. Both institutions serve male inmates. All inmates must pursue educational, vocational, and life skills goals and hold down a prison job. However, the camp environment is more relaxed, and offenders have fewer rules and more freedom. 

Morgantown FCI

Federal Correctional institution Morgantown Kennedy Center, located in Monongalia County near Morgantown, West Virginia, is a minimum-security facility for male inmates. Nicknamed “Club Fed,” it features amenities unusual to most federal prisons in West Virginia, including a bocce ball court, a movie theater, and a basketball court. It is known for its nonviolent, white-collar inmate population and relaxed atmosphere. Even so, everyone incarcerated here must hold down a job and participate in programs designed to rehabilitate them in preparation for release.
