Butner FMC

Federal Medical Center Butner serves male inmates of all security levels. It is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex (FCC), which is near the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. This institution has a full hospital that specializes in oncology and behavioral health science. In addition, it is the only federal correctional institution with a residential program for sex offenders. High-profile inmates include Salvador DiMasi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives in Massachusetts, and John Hinckley Jr., who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan. 

Butner Medium 1 FCI

Federal Correctional Institution Butner Medium 1 is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex (FCC). It is located near the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. This medium-security institution houses a psychiatric hospital and serves male offenders. Inmates live in two-person dorm rooms and have access to standard health services and individual counseling, group therapy, and residential and non-residential drug programs. Secondary and post-secondary educational opportunities are available. Inmates can receive occupational education in carpentry, electrical, horticulture, and logistics and a logistics apprenticeship. Offenders have access to recreation, including intramural sports and arts and crafts. As with all North Carolina federal prisons, it is mandatory that every inmate work at a prison job.

Butner Medium 2 FCI

Federal Correctional Institution Butner Medium 1 is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex (FCC). It is located near the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Inmates incarcerated here are male and housed in two-person cells. Individual and group counseling services are available, including groups for stress and anger management. In addition, the facility has a step-down program that assists inmates with serious mental health issues in developing coping skills. As well as GED, secondary and post-secondary programs, inmates can learn advanced occupation skills in fields such as culinary arts, automotive electrical, engine and undercarriage repair, drivetrain, carpentry, office system technology, and automotive technology. An apprenticeship is available in commercial cleaning. Inmates can also participate in indoor and outdoor recreation or read books and magazines in the leisure and legal library during their free time. As with other federal prisons in North Carolina, all inmates must hold down a prison job.

Butner Low FCI

Federal Correctional Institution Butner Low is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex (FCC). It is located near the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. As a low-security facility, FCI Butner places fewer controls and restrictions on its inmates. Even so, all are required to hold down a job and participate in educational, vocational, and enrichment courses designed to make the transition to the civilian world successful upon their release.

Butner Prison Camp

Federal Correctional Institution Butner Camp lies adjacent to the FCI Medium 1 prison and is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex (FCC). It is located near the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. The camp setting is designed for nonviolent offenders and features fewer security restrictions and controls. Inmates are expected to pursue educational goals and to hold down a prison job. Since many residents at the camp are nearing the completion of their sentences in North Carolina federal prisons, services emphasize providing offenders with the knowledge and skills they will need once they are released back into civilian society.

Rivers CI

Correctional Institution Rivers is located near the town of Winton in unincorporated Hertford County, North Carolina. It’s a private, low-security facility operated by Geo Group and is under contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Opened in 2001, CI Rivers continues to house many offenders who committed their crimes in the District of Columbia and many foreign nationals from Mexico. Medical, educational, vocational, and life skills classes are available to all inmates, who must work in the prison setting. The money inmates make can be spent to purchase nonessential consumer goods in the institution’s commissary.
