On Wednesday, September 7, and Thursday, September 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., the FCI-Petersburg Education Department held class signups for Adult Continuing Education classes. The number of individuals registered was very impressive. Over 400 students – around 20 percent of the prison population – enrolled in a class. Thirty-eight of these signed up for my class “Writing and Publishing.” Several of the classes maxed out at the allowable 40 students, 20 in the current class, and 20 on the waiting list.
As an instructor, it is very gratifying to see such a huge interest in not only the Adult Continuing Education program as a whole but my class in particular. I even had students sign up and make the comment that my “reputation preceded me.” When I went on to explain who I am and what I’ve done, they stopped me to explain that they already knew. What a flattering moment!
The signups themselves went well. I was surprised to see such a tremendous turnout on Wednesday the 8th because of the torrential storm going on. I had to continue to move the signup sheet away from the edge of the table so that it wouldn’t get soaked with water from the student’s coats as they leaned over the table.
As I reflect upon the continued interest in my “Writing and Publishing” class, questions come to mind. As you’ll note from my last Class Update, I wasn’t all that sure if I was going to continue on with “Writing and Publishing” or if I was going to transition over to “Professional Writing”. I think with the current demand for “Writing and Publishing,” I will teach it for one more quarter following this one, then transition over to “Professional Writing.”
Regardless of what I decide to do, you can be sure that I will keep you in the loop with my weekly blog posts and ever-colorful commentary.
