FAMILIAR FACES AGAINST MASS INCARCERATION PROJECT LAUNCHES NATIONAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN, JOINS 2013 INTERNATIONAL MEN’S DAYM OBSERVANCE
PHILADELPHIA, PA (USA) – 19 AUGUST 2013 – According to a working paper issued in June 2013 by the National Bureau of Economic Research (http://www.nber.org) entitled, “Juvenile Incarceration, Human Capital and Future Crime: Evidence from Randomly-Assigned Judges”, approximately 130,000 juveniles are detained annually in the United States and on any given day approximately 70,000 juveniles are placed in detention. The working paper, authored by Anna Aiizer, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Policy at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and Joseph J. Doyle, Jr., Associate Professor of Management and Applied Economics in the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts points out there is a juvenile incarceration leads to “large decreases in the likelihood of high school completion and large increases in the likelihood of adult incarceration”.
So, what can and should parents, educators, school administrators, legislators, religious institutions, businesses, health care professionals and providers, social services professionals and providers, legal professionals, social entrepreneurs, and concerned citizens do to prevent chlidren and youths – particularly boys and young adolescent males from being placed on the “fast track” to prison? The “Familiar Faces Mass Incarceration” Project’s has launched a National Awareness Campaign on Mass Incarceration and the School-To-Prison Pipeline which (www.familliarfacesagainstmassincarceration.org) addresses this question. The project and the national awareness campaign are the brainchild of singer and author Terrance Tykeem and is joining indiviuals, organizations, and institutions in observing 2013 International Mens Day under the theme, “Keeping Men and Boys Safe” in over 70 nations on Tuesday, 19 November 2013. A number of events in observances of 2013 International Men’s Day will be produced or co-sponsored during the week leading up to 2013 International Men’s Day.
Inaugurated in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999 by Jerome Teelucksingh, Ph.D., a Gender Issues Thought Leader, author, poet, and faculty member in the History Department of the University of West Indies, International Men’s Day celebrates and honors the contributions and selfless sacrifices that men make every day to our families, our communities, and our world. International Men’s Day shares a 48-hour partnership with Universal Children’s Day which is observed worldwide on 20 November of each year and is endorsed by the United Nations.
