The Womens Village: A Source of Change for Incarcerated Women

Women incarcerated at the Washington Corrections Center for Women have united together to create a community with the prison called-The Womens Village.

The idea for The Womens Village came about as both women inmates and staff wanted to create a more positive community environment and to help incarcerated women change their thinking and help to culture a more positive prison environment, especially for long-term prisoners.

The women involved with The Womens Village realized that they could utilize each and everyone of their unique strengths to create a prison culture based on the pursuit of personal excellence.

Women Offender Programs Correctional Service Canada

For women offenders in Canada, many advances have been made to encompass a more holistic approach to their specific needs during and after incarceration.

In 1990 the Task Force Report on Federally Sentenced Women, entitled Creating Choices, was created. Creating Choices was founded on the principles of empowerment, meaningful and responsible choices, respect and dignity, supportive environments, and shared responsibility.

Bedford Hills Correctional Facility College Program for Women

For women inmates, reentry into society can be extremely difficult. Often women returning to society have little education, children and limited job skills. So, for the women incarcerated at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, having the opportunity to receive a college degree can dramatically change the course of their lives for the better.

In 1996, the Bedford Hills College Program was founded so provide women inmates incarcerated at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility located in New York State and a maximum security prison for women. In association with the Correctional Facility is Marymount Manhattan College who offers non-credited College-preparatory courses and credit bearing courses that may lead to she women inmates receiving an Associate of Arts degree in Social Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sociology.
