Independent Study through Correspondence  Image courtesy evening.unm.edu

Correspondence courses offer students a flexible, convenient alternative to earn college credit for those who cannot attend regular classes. In addition, they provide an opportunity for all UNM students located anywhere to add to their credit hours in their degree programs. Lower and upper division courses spanning a wide range of disciplines are available for registration. Many degrees allow, with some restrictions, up to 30 credit hours of correspondence courses to be applied toward graduation.

Admission

Students currently admitted to UNM are eligible to register for Correspondence Courses through the Correspondence Office during specified registration periods. Students not currently admitted must apply either for readmission or non-degree admission online or through the Admissions Office located at the One Stop in Mesa Vista Hall (Albuquerque main campus) or at the One Stop located at 1155 University SE at the corner of University and Cesar Chavez (across the street from “The Pit” in Albuquerque). Complete admissions information is available at www.unm.edu/admissions (click on “Apply to UNM”) or call 505-277-2446. Once admitted to UNM, complete the Application for Correspondence form to register for your correspondence classes.

Correspondence

Correspondence courses involve individual, independent instruction of a student by an instructor on a one-to-one basis. Typically, this will entail study at home, as well as the exchange of materials and evaluations through a mail/courier sImage courtesy www.nashvillescene.comervice. Interaction and feedback between correspondence course faculty and students take the forms of written assignments, testing, evaluations, guidance, and assistance via such media as D2L, print/written word, telephone, fax, e-mail, and other electronic technologies. Computer access and/or a proctored exam will be required as determined by your correspondence instructor. A student must be self-motivated and self-disciplined to successfully complete a correspondence course.

Correspondence courses follow the university Academic Calendar and Tuition and Fees Schedule. University admissions procedures must be followed before registering for these and other distance learning courses. An Admissions application may be completed online and, upon admittance to the university, students may register for courses online via Pipeline.

Thompson Rivers University

About Distance Education  Image courtesy www.leaderframes.com

So you’re thinking about taking a distance course. Since beginning a post-secondary course or program is a big investment in time and money, read through the following information before you register. It will help you determine if distance learning is right for you.

How Distance Education Works

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL) offers over 55 programs and 590 courses in a variety of flexible formats, including print-based, web-based, online and in-person. Courses and programs delivered by TRU-OL are fully accredited and recognized by other post-secondary institutions, so you can take a single course with us and transfer the credits to another institution or complete an entire program.

Open Education Explained

Distance education means that you can study wherever you live and wherever you are: in a public library, at home, at work or overseas. But open education also means that you may begin your course or program whenever you like; there is no need to wait for a particular semester to begin.

It also means that people who would find it difficult to complete a course or program on a physical campus can still access post-secondary education. This includes people living in a small town without access to on-campus education, people with disabilities, working students and those with family commitments. TRU-OL also has few barriers to entry, so your ability to enrol won’t be affected by your past academic records and you won’t be required to submit transcripts from secondary school to register in courses.

In addition, we offer students the opportunity to receive credits towards a program through PLAR, or Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. This program is in place to recognize the experience and skills you have gathered from previous education, or life and work experience.
