Allenwood Prison Services Information
Allenwood Low Federal Correctional Institution is a low-security federal prison in Allenwood, Pennsylvania. The prison houses male inmates. It opened in 1992 and is part of the Allenwood Federal Correctional Complex. The complex also includes the high-security United States Penitentiary Allenwood and FCI Allenwood Medium.
The facility has housed several notable inmates, including:
- Former White House staff member Jeb Stuart Magruder. His incarceration resulted from his involvement in the Watergate scandal. After serving his time, he was released in 1975.
- Former Middlesex County Sheriff John McGonigle. He was convicted of tax evasion and racketeering for accepting kickbacks. He was released in 1999.
- Terrorist Kifah Jayyousi. He was convicted in 2007 of conspiracy to commit murder and providing material support for terrorism. After serving 12 years in custody, he was released in 2017.
- Attorney Alex van der Zwaan. He was sentenced to 30 days for making false statements regarding the Special Counsel investigation of the 2016 elections. He was released in 2018.
- “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli. He was sentenced to seven years in prison for securities fraud. While incarcerated, prison officials determined he was operating his company from behind prison walls with the aid of a contraband cell phone. He is scheduled for release in 2023.
- Giuseppe “Joe” Giudice, husband of Real Housewives of New Jersey. In 2014, Giudice received a sentence of 41 months in prison for mail, wire, and bankruptcy fraud. He was released from custody in 2019.
Media reports indicate that inmates have been charged with weapons possession and running fraudulent government cooperation schemes from inside the prison.
Inmates live in dormitories in two and three-person cubicles. Special Housing Unit inmates are confined in two-person cells.
The Health Services Department provides routine medical and dental care. Inmates receive physical examinations, annual immunization/screening, emergency medical treatment, and medications from this department. They must submit a triage form to obtain routine care. Inmates can receive emergency medical care by approaching any staff member.
All inmates at FCI Allenwood Low receive an intake interview with a psychologist. Psychologists are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for crisis intervention and suicide prevention.
Individual counseling services are available for inmates experiencing family, interpersonal, adjustment, or other personal concerns. Educational and therapeutic groups addressing particular topics like stress management, anger management, and dealing with other people are also available.
Medications for mental health problems are available through Health Services. A treatment program for sex offenders is voluntary and is available at other facilities.
Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP)
FCI Allenwood Low has the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). It also offers a Drug Abuse Education program, the Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program (NR-DAP), and self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
FCI Allenwood Low Educational, Library, and Recreation Offerings
Allenwood prison provides GED and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) programs. Inmates receive certificates and $25 credit for successful program completion.
A parenting program and Adult Continuing Education (ACE) classes are also available to the inmate population. High school diplomas, career certificates, and college degrees are available through paid correspondence programs.

Advanced Occupational Education
FCI Allenwood Low offers advanced occupational education in Culinary Arts, Office Automation, and Fiber Optics.
Allenwood Low Federal Correctional Institution offers vocational training in Computer Internet Computing Core Certification (IC3).
Allenwood prison offers apprenticeship programs in Cooking and Housekeeping.
Education Department has leisure and law libraries. All federally-mandated legal books and policies are available. Inmates also have access to the TRULINCS Electronic Law Library.
Electric typewriters are available in the library. However, inmates must purchase typewriter ribbons and correction tape from the commissary. Manual typewriters are available for inmates who do not buy ribbons from the commissary. A copy machine is in the law library for inmate use.
Inmates can also check out newspapers, magazines, and fiction and nonfiction books in the leisure library.
The FCI Allenwood UNICOR facility produces office furniture.
Allenwood prison inmates may spend up to $360.00 each month for regular purchases. Unit Managers can authorize additional amounts for special purchase items. Available items include snacks, food, clothing, shoes, and electronics. Inmates can also purchase over-the-counter medications from the commissary.
Each inmate is responsible for knowing the amount of money available in their commissary account. Inmates use their laundry bags to carry their purchases back to their cells.
FCI Allenwood Low’s Recreation Department consists of both indoor and outdoor areas. Inmates can participate in hobby crafts, including ceramics, painting, drawing, and crochet. Instructional music classes are also available.
The facility offers a robust wellness program, including:

Visitation Information for Allenwood Prison
Visiting hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Visitation is between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on federal holidays. FCI Allenwood Low in the News
In June 2020, inmate Tavon Johnson was charged with drug possession while incarcerated at Allenwood prison. Guards found 120 Suboxone strips in his possession. As a result, he received an additional 12 months in custody.
In May 2020, “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli sought compassionate release to develop COVID-19 treatments. His sentencing judge denied the petition citing no “cases of COVID-19” at the facility as of the date of his petition.
In May 2019, Donald and Matthew Barlow were charged with smuggling Oxycodone pills into the facility. Matthew Barlow was then an inmate at FCI Allenwood Low. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Donald Barlow smuggled Oxycodone pills into the institution inside balloons. The Department of Justice investigated the incident.
In February 2018, Jose Capriata and Lenelle Gray, prisoners at Allenwood Low Federal Correctional Institution, were indicted on possession of weapon charges.
In March 2017, TheArthur Duncan was admitted to practice law in federal court. He had previously served 39 months at Allenwood prison on drug charges.
In 2000, George Gallego and Hamed Elbarki were indicted for an illegal scheme. This scheme involved other prisoners’ families paying James Gallego (George’s brother) thousands of dollars to help arrange cooperation agreements for sentence reductions. George and Hamed were prisoners at FCI Allenwood Low at the time. George Gallego had his sentence reduced by informing on his co-conspirators.
