Leavenworth USP

United States Penitentiary Leavenworth, in Leavenworth 25 miles north of Kansas City, is a civilian medium-security facility for male inmates. From 1903, when it was built, until 2005, USP Leavenworth was the largest high-security federal prison in the United States. The facility follows the Auburn system with large rectangular buildings and a stringent external security perimeter. The institution also contains a minimum-security satellite prison camp for male inmates. The cells where offenders live are in a rectangular housing unit. They are situated back-to-back in the middle of the building, enabling guards to easily patrol the perimeter. Inmates are housed in one- and two-person cells. Numerous walls, fences, and other security systems combine to support security functions. Prisoners incarcerated at Leavenworth must pursue academic and vocational goals, maintain prison employment, and attend life skills enrichment programs. As a Medical Care Level 2 facility, it can house inmates with routine medical care needs such as diabetes. The prison also houses a UNICOR facility.

Leavenworth Prison Camp

United States Penitentiary Leavenworth Camp, located in Leavenworth 25 miles north of Kansas City, is a minimum-security federal prison camp on the grounds of the medium-security USP Leavenworth. Designed for nonviolent offenders, the camp encourages those incarcerated to acquire social, academic, and vocational skills that can aid them upon their release into the civilian world. Due to being a minimum-security prison camp, inmates convicted of violent and sexual offenses, and those with histories of escape, are not permitted to be housed at this facility. Inmates have access to both law and leisure libraries.
